In holdem, the initial step is to get the card game started, and for this the players put out a particular total of money. 'Posting the blinds' is the frequently used expression for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and deals two cards face down to all players. A regular deck of fifty two cards is used. Then there is the initial round of betting. This round is often known as a "pre-flop".

After the 1st betting sequence, the first card is tossed aside. This tossed aside card is referred to as the "burn card", and this is done to make sure that there is no corruption. The following 3 cards are then flipped face up on the poker table. These cards are referred to as 'the flop'. Now comes a 2nd round of betting, after that the croupier burns another card and flips 1 more card onto the poker table. After this, competitors can use the sixth card to create a 5card poker hand.

A further sequence of wagering happens, and in a number of styles of poker, here is where the bet amount increases. There is another round of throwing away a card, and a final deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is referred to as the "river". Bettors can now employ any of the five cards on the poker table, and/or the 2 cards in their pocket, to form a five-card poker hand.

To wrap it up there is an additional sequence of betting. After that, all the remaining players begin to display their hands. This is describe as the "showdown". Obviously, the player who shows the best hand wins. When gamblers have tied hands a sharing of the winnings is considered.

Holdem is a basic game to understand, but to acquire knowledge one needs a fair amount of studying.
