He routinely told his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil began playing seriously after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing love for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly humble about his accomplishments. Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
