His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn anything he could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn't permit the adverse feedback from other people annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.

He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a teaching period and winning wasn't a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal love for poker. He says that he's picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his accomplishments. He knows he makes errors in each game of poker and always aspires to improve.

Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
